The Living Lab: Spring Recess in the Park

What if a park became a studio?

What if learning emerged from curiosity, materials, and shared attention—rather than a fixed lesson plan?

The Living Lab is an experimental Spring Recess program rooted in contemporary art practices and nature-based exploration. Guided by a living, unfixed curriculum, children are invited to observe, question, collaborate, and create—shaping the experience through their interests and the rhythms of the season.

Mornings unfold outdoors, with the park as our collaborator. Children explore through drawing, collage, sculpture, movement, photography, mark-making, mapping, storytelling, and ephemeral installations using natural materials. A branch becomes a line, a shadow becomes a composition, a walk becomes a performance. Outcomes are not prescribed; they emerge through process.

Throughout the day, children work alongside one another—sharing ideas, asking questions, negotiating meaning, and learning how to listen and respond. Collaboration and dialogue are central to the work, supporting meta-thinking and the development of friendships through shared inquiry.

In the afternoon, we move indoors to slow down and reflect. Through books, quiet observation, rest, and continued making, children revisit their discoveries, transform materials, or let projects evolve naturally.

This is not a camp where everyone makes the same thing. It’s a carefully held environment where process matters more than product, and where children are trusted as thinkers and makers.

The Living Lab is a Spring Recess experience that feels less like a program—and more like an invitation.

Why Choose Creative Nature NYC?

At Creative Nature NYC, we view children as natural researchers and inventors. Our curriculum is designed to co-create with the children, drawing from their questions, interests, and imaginative ideas. We focus on blending art, science, and ecology, allowing children to explore and experiment while cultivating critical thinking. Through the exploration of nature and recycled materials, children will ask important questions about their relationship with the world and how we can protect it.

Our teachers, with backgrounds in visual arts and ecology, are passionate about guiding young artists in exploring the interconnections between nature and creativity. We encourage expression through the "hundred languages" children use—drawing, sculpting, painting, movement, rhythm, and words.

Let's Ask Big Questions:

How can art help us understand ecology? How do we bridge the gap between humans and the natural world? At Creative Nature NYC, we believe that by experiencing the beauty and wonder of nature, children will develop a deep sense of responsibility for its preservation.

Join us this summer for a transformative, artistic exploration of Grover Cleveland Playground’s biodiversity, and watch your child grow into a curious, eco-conscious creator!
